18 Feet Under
Ooooo. I just realized I'll be able to get caught up on the last few episodes of
Six Feet Under this weekend!!
Clearing the pipes
Went back to my singing 'gig' tonight, after a couple years of not being able to fit it into the schedule. I realized my creative soul needed that outlet, and I feel so much better now. One creative outlet is directly related to all others, and they need to be exercised. This is my creative jogging or something.
Ahhhh.
Monday, Monday
Since the kids don't start school on Monday this year, I took today off, and we're off to the
Henry Doorly ZOO!
A world renowned zoo, I'm surprised it didn't make it onto any of the final 25 quarter designs. Our quarter will go into circulation April 2006, but (fellow Nebraskans) go vote on the finalists
here.
Hat Pix
OK, Got the pictures of the new
Hat up. And
here's some things I've made for myself over the last several years.
Never Satisfied
Sheesh, I go from being alone in the house, to a house-full, and I'm not satisfied either way.
First I'm lonely, then I have too many people around.
I guess I'm just kinda set in my ways (already, I'm not THAT old!), I'm actually anxious for the summer to be over and get some routines going again. (But don't tell my kids that!)
;P
Hair Dye and Duct Tape
That sums up my weekend.
;P
I had a 'wild hair' to see if I could make a duct tape hat, which I did. (but no pictures yet, sorry, they didn't turn out) It turned out ok, and gave me more hat ideas. Funny papers hats? It could happen.
And colored my hair. Now, I was going for subtle, and I achieved it. But so subtle that people don't even notice? Maybe that's
too subtle.
Next time, I'll go for
purple, they'll notice that!
What will they come up with next?
I had heard of
Dogster but have no dog. Today I heard of
Catster, but have no cat (nor any desire to ever own one). So I wondered if there were other 'sters' for pets out there. No Turtlester, or Birdster (yet) which covers two of the three current pets in the household, but sure enough, there is a
Hampsterster! Silly name, that's for sure.
My Love Affair with Beads
Part One---The Archeological Dig
The summer after 4th grade, my family lived in a trailer house on an abandoned scout camp. My dad's service group had purchased this old camp, and I don't remember exactly why we had to live there for the summer. Probably since my dad had summers off (he was in education before retirement), he was being the handy-man fixing things. All I remember is it was one of the best times of my childhood. My brother and I would hike, fish, and in general have tons of adventures. We stayed out of the dilapidated buildings for the most part, since that was the rule, except the bath houses (when ya gotta go--ya gotta go!), and the 'mess hall' which had a library upstairs where we 'rescued' several old books.
My favorite part was that somewhere in all the adventures, I discovered some beads, just under the top layer of dirt!! I dug around a bit, and found a few more. Went back the next day and dug around a bit more, and found a few more. I went back every few days the rest of the summer, and by the end, I had a little butter dish 1/2 full of all different colors and sizes of what I was sure were Indian beads. They were like no other beads I had ever seen, not plastic cheap-o beads, some even striped! I imagined all summer the native people who stitched these beads onto moccasins, or headbands, and dropped a few around.
I didn't find out until many years later that I found these beads outside the cabin that in scout camp days had been the arts and crafts cabin. But I still figured that could just be a coincidence, and that some how, the kids at the scout camp had never found these Indian beads.
The butter dish is still somewhere in my parent's house. I never made them into anything, they were too special. And they started me on my life-long love affair with tiny bits of glass, metal, and/or clay with holes in them.
As long as we're on the subject...
More on beads coming up.
Beads, Beads the magical fruit
Debra asked "What all do you do with your beads?"
Collect them, mostly.
;P
And by that I mean that I have acquired many beads because they called to me. Called to me that I should have them, but not telling me (yet) what they want done with them.
It's amazing, I'll keep a bead or set of beads for several years, and out-of-the-blue there will be the perfect use for them.
But other things I do with beads include (but are not limited to); stretchy bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and bead-weaving in the gourd stitch (commonly called the peyote stitch). Plus, making my own poly-clay beads.
And because I really,
really, hate when I say 'pictures coming later' or some such crap,
here's a picture of a necklace I made for myself a while back. It's furnace glass beads, the larger circle one is loose on the necklace. There are two strands of clear matte beads and silver bugles, and theoretically, you could wear the necklace backwards, with the loose circle just dangling on the two strands.
This piece has matching earrings which are just the plain furnace glass.

Pay Day
So today's pay day, and I'm feeling like my budget is closer to 'in line' than 'out of control' now, so I treated the kids to Popeyes for supper, then ran off to Hobby Lobby to pick up those on sale patterns.
I was very diciplined at HL, and only spent $10. OK, it was $10.11, but close enough. I bought two hat patterns, which was what I went for, browsed the fabric, and of course, bought a few beads.
I'm looking for earring inspiration, but didn't find any. I only bought the beads that I really loved, and they are started on a project already.
But the funniest thing tonight was part of the adventure. I had to get to HL in a round about way because of different road construction projects, and I'm going up a road I don't normally travel, so seeing new things. I drive past a house that has a 'sold' sign, a class C-type camper for sale, and a portable basketball hoop, also for sale. (is 'portable' the right word?) Anyway, I've looked into getting one of these for my boys, I know the price can range from $75 or so up to at least $150, and as I drive by, I see the sign says
FOR SALE $25. Cool, I'm thinking. I can afford that! I can't take it home right now in this car, but I could ask my friend to pick it up in his painting van, he'd do that. I don't have the cash on me, but I could offer a check, or offer to go to an ATM to get the cash.
So yup, I turned the car around and pulled up in their driveway. Something told me to double check the sign before ringing their bell. I go to check, and the notebook page that was the 'for sale' sign was kinda wrapped around the pole, and it actually read
FOR SALE $125. Whoops. I got right back in my car and headed out.
There were two adorible little girls at the glass screen door as I started to pull away. They had heard the car and come to see what was up. I waved, and they seemed dissapointed that I wasn't coming to the door. Oh, well.
Nebulas
At work, we have a little customize-your-wallpaper program, and since today happened to be I'm-tired-of-the-wallpaper-I-have day, I checked the list for something new. I found
Eskimo Nebula, and remembered how much I love nebula pictures.
We went to the SAC museum a few years ago when there was a Hubble display with pictures of nebulas and information about the Hubble itself. It was awe-some and then-some.
Here's a few more cool nebula pix I found:
M2-9: Wings of a Butterfly Nebula ,
An Orion of a Different Color ,
Orion's Horsehead Nebula ,
Orion Nebula: The 2MASS View,
Orion: The Big Picture
I found these on
a site that since June 16, 1995, has posted cool space pictures everyday. It is now a perminent fixture on my
BlogRoll.
Oh, and here's a place you can send nebula
e-cards.
Links
I haven't had time to read very much of
this yet, but it looks interesting.
Love, love, love
mosaics, can't wait to do some of my own.
McCall patterns are on sale at
Hobby Lobby this week, and I need another hat pattern. Trying to decide between
this one and
this one.
And
secrets from Grandma. My own include not giving a knife as a gift, so as not to 'cut' the friendship (it is ok to 'sell' the knife to a friend for a nickle), and putting a penny above the front door to promote wealth in the household.
